The nature reserve is located between Barwedel and Ehra-Lessien in the valley basin of a ground moraine in which a large area of low and high moor has formed after the Vistula glaciation. The moor was used for agriculture and peat extraction for centuries . From the end of the 19th century, it was extensively drained and heavily modified by peat extraction. There was a habitat mosaic with bogs and swamp forests , Torfstichgewässern, quaking , slimming and small sedge vineyards and wetlands . The area is characterized by peat moss-rich moorland and swamp forests with alder and birch trees. In the herb layer settle u. a. Small two-leaf and royal fern . Together with parts of the "Vogelmoor extension areas" nature reserve, it forms one of the largest contiguous birch-moor forest complexes in the south-eastern Lower Saxony lowlands. In the south of the reserve there are small areas of oak forests on sandy soils.

In areas free from forests, vegetation typical for high bogs with cotton grass and sundew has been preserved. There are also dioecious sedge , wire sedge and softwort as well as peat bog gullies with beak reed communities . In small areas occurring, silting peat cuttings settle u. a. Water lily , water hose and dwarf hedgehog. Also luronium happens here. Damp heaths are characterized by bell heather . The crane , which was thought to be extinct in large parts of West Germany before extensive protective measures were taken, had one of its last breeding sites in the Vogelmoor and the surrounding area.

The forests, which have a high old and dead wood have share, partly forested, grasslands partly as a hay meadow and extensive grazing used, some of them are broke . Parts of the nature reserve are grazed with mountain cattle for care .

The area drains through ditches to the Kleine Aller . The mill pond of the former bird mill is located in the south of the nature reserve. Today the area is used as a homestead . The nature reserve is surrounded by agricultural land and forests. In the east, the nature reserve borders on federal highway 248 .
