The nature reserve (NSG) Mittlere Ohreaue is located between Zasenbeck and Benitz in the Gifhorn district in Lower Saxony on the banks of the Ohre .

The nature reserve belongs to the Lüneburg Heath - Wendland natural area and lies on the border with Saxony-Anhalt in the area of ​​the city of Wittingen and the patch of Brome. It covers 84 hectares and is about twelve kilometers long in a north-west-south-east direction. It is usually between 50 and 100 meters wide and borders Saxony-Anhalt in the east. The area consists of the partly natural, partly straightened course of the Ohre and the surrounding wetlands . The Ohre or the largely silted-up border ditch form the eastern border of the nature reserve.

history

The area was designated as a BR 134 nature reserve on December 14, 2007 with effect from December 20, 2007. The district of Gifhorn has been the sponsor since then.

Ecology, flora and fauna

The NSG Mittlere Ohreaue belongs entirely to the FFH area 418 “Ohreaue”. In addition to the course of the river, there are floodplain forests , moist to wet grassland , including reed beds and large sedge beds , but also some arable land. The Saxon-Anhalt NSG Ohreaue , established in 2000, connects along the entire eastern border and forms with the NSG Mittlere Ohreaue in fact a unit as part of the Green Belt . The NSG is part of the Natura 2000 network .

The area is the habitat and food area of ​​numerous threatened species. Otters and beavers use the otters on their hikes between Ise , Drömling and Dumme . Numerous amphibians as well as water-bound insect and bird species are found in the area. Fishing, hunting, forestry and agricultural use are permitted to a limited extent.
