flora

A crane

In addition to the high and low moor areas, there are extensive alder and birch forests in this area. The small-scale alternation of bog heather ( Erica tetralix ), pipe grass ( Molinia ), bog forests and grassland characterizes part of the raised bog complex. The composition is as follows:

  • 39% mixed forest
  • 38% grassland
  • 10% peat extraction
  • 5% arable land
  • 4% bog
  • 4% coniferous forest

Wildlife

The nature reserve is an important resting and breeding area for many bird species. Various species of migratory birds such as the teal ( Anas crecca ), the curlew ( Numenius arquata ) and the whinchat ( Saxicola rubetra ) rest here. The most important species, however, is the crane ( Grus grus ), which has a significant breeding population in the Schweimker Moor.
