The Kiehnmoor was declared a nature reserve in 1992 . It is located in the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony and is cross-district in the area of three municipalities: in Wriedel in the joint municipality of Bevensen-Ebstorf , in Eimke in the joint municipality of Suderburg (both district of Uelzen ) and in Faßberg ( district of Celle ).

The nature reserve has a size of 440 hectares . 340 hectares of this are in the Uelzen district and 100 hectares in the Celle district. The lower nature conservation authorities of these counties are responsible for the area.

description

A large part of the Kiehnmoors is wet grassland, some of which is still extensively managed. For the most part, however, the area is left natural. A small sandy heather area is included in the nature reserve. In the south, this is directly adjacent to the larger heathland areas of the Südheide Nature Park . Heidschnucken are still kept on these heather areas . North of the Kiehnmoor, immediately adjacent, is the lowland of the partially dammed river Gerdau , with the nature reserve Brambosteler Moor . Here is the headwaters of the Gerdau, one of the two headwaters of the Ilmenau . In the southeast, the Unterlüß firing range of the Rheinmetall company and the Große Heide near Unterlüß , which are closed to the public, are directly adjacent . There is also an absolute ban on entering the Kiehnmoor. This whole area is very isolated. The crane and black stork have settled here on rare bird species . The otter can also be found here. With the near-natural forest stands (partly alder and birch forests ), it forms an important habitat for the black grouse, which is threatened with extinction and very sensitive to disturbance, due to its seclusion and the good food and space conditions . Together with the neighboring areas around the Munster and Bergen military training areas , the Great Moor near Becklingen , the moors near Sittensen , the Ostenholzer Moor and the Meißendorfer ponds and Bannetzer Moor , this area of the Lüneburg Heath houses the largest contiguous black grouse population of the Central European lowlands.
