The heathland middle Lüßplateau was a nature reserve in the municipality of Südheide in the Lower Saxony district of Celle . The area has been almost completely cleared since July 30, 2019 and protected by the new nature reserve " Heiden und Magerrasen in der Südheide " (LÜ 334).

General

The nature reserve was designated on July 16, 1995 and until the end of July 2019 comprised three spatially separated areas with a total size of around 293 hectares : The Misselhorn Heath , the Heide on Schillohsberg and the Heide areas on Weesener Weg .

The two larger sub-areas of the nature reserve are part of the FFH area "Heiden und Magerrasen in der Südheide" (State No. 277, identifier DE-3126-331), which includes several other areas, the smaller sub-area is part of the FFH Area "Örtze with tributaries". The nature reserve is thus part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

On July 30, 2019, the nature reserve " Heiden und Magerrasen in der Südheide " was designated, which serves to secure the FFH area of the same name. The partial areas of the FFH area, which were previously protected by the ordinance of the nature reserve "Heath areas middle Lüßplateau", were removed from this nature reserve and part of the new nature reserve, so that only the heather areas on Weesener Weg, which cover around 11 hectares, are in the old Nature reserve remained. They border to the south on the nature reserve " Weesener Bach ".

The responsible nature conservation authority is the district of Celle.

Area description

The Misselhorn Heath with a sub-area called "Tiefental" has a size of around 209 hectares. It begins 2 km east of Hermannsburg and consists mainly of heathland. These are almost exclusively with the heather ( Calluna vulgaris coverage). The bell heather ( Erica tetralix ) can only be found sporadically on the more humid locations . On some smaller boggy areas and bodies of water there are water hoses ( Utricularia ), a carnivorous plant that drifts in the water and which is endangered or in some cases endangered in Germany, as well as the protected mean sundew ( Drosera intermedia ), also a carnivorous plant. We also find the protected forest lice herb ( Pedicularis sylvatica ), which is also on the Red List of endangered vascular plants in Germany, and the rare lung gentian ( Gentiana pneumonanthe ). There are also occasional cotton grasses on these areas.

Memorial stone for the mission celebration

Here in the “Tiefental” is a memorial stone that was placed in 1999 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Hermannsburg Mission . The stone is intended to remind that the mission festival was celebrated here in earlier times. There is a painting, dated 1855, that depicts the founder of the mission, Ludwig Harms , preaching here in the open air.

Heidschnucken in the Misselhorn Heath

The other area of the nature reserve, the "Heide am Schillohsberg" has an area of around 73 hectares. It is located east of Lutterloh . It is a pure heather area, as is the "heather areas on Weesener Weg" with a size of around 11 hectares, which are located directly north of Lutterloh and are the only ones not to become part of the "Heiden und Magerrasen in der Südheide" nature reserve.

Various regional and international hiking trails lead through the area. Among other things, the European long-distance hiking trail E1 , the Heidschnuckenweg and the German Way of St. James Via Scandinavica .
