The Barnstedt-Melbecker Bach is Bach , the south-east of Lower Saxony municipality of Betzdorf springs, by the municipality Barnstedt flows and northeast of Melbeck as a left tributary to the Ilmenau flows . Together with its tributaries Glindenbach and Billerbeck , their lowlands and the adjacent valley edge areas , the stream forms a nature reserve .
Nature reserve
The nature reserve is located south of Lüneburg and west of Bienenbüttel . It extends over parts of the area of the communities Barnstedt and Melbeck in the combined community of Ilmenau and the community of Betzendorf in the combined community of Amelinghausen in the district of Lüneburg and in the community of Bienenbüttel in the district of Uelzen .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 280 is about 310 hectares . Of this, around 307 hectares are in the Lüneburg district and around 3 hectares in the Uelzen district. Most of the nature reserve is part of the FFH area "Ilmenau with tributaries". In the east it borders on the nature reserve " Lüneburg Ilmenau lowlands with zoo ". The area has been a nature reserve since December 13, 2007. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Lüneburg.
The nature reserve stretches along the Barnstedt-Melbeck brook from its source area west of Barnstedt to shortly before the confluence with the Ilmenau, where the nature reserve "Lüneburg Ilmenau lowlands with zoo" joins. The two tributaries included in the nature reserve, Glindenbach and Billerbeck, flow between Melbeck and Embsen from the left into the Barnstedt- Melbeck Bach. There are also numerous spring rivulets flowing towards the side.
The protected area is characterized by the near-natural brooks with a scree-rich river bed in the upper reaches and sandy to gravel beds in the middle and lower reaches. The mostly shaded streams are accompanied by wet forests, especially floodplain and swamp forests . In addition, there are Riede , reedbeds and Hochstaudenfluren . At the edge of the valley, mixed oak and beech forests are predominant. Parts of the protected area are used as grassland , but also for arable farming.
In the protected area u. a. Otter , river lamprey , bullhead , river mussel and crested newt .
The nature reserve is crossed by public roads in several places, including the federal road 4 and the state road 233 in Melbeck and the district road 33 between Melbeck and Barnstedt. In Melbeck, the protected area is limited in parts to the stream. The bank areas are built on. To the southeast of Embsen, the Lüneburg – Soltau railway also crosses the edge of the protected area.
