Bennerstedt is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Scharnebeck in the Lüneburg district .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 158 is 152 hectares . It is located northwest of Scharnebeck and the part of the forest area "Die Bennerstedt" north of Kreisstraße 29 is under protection. In the east the nature reserve borders on the Elbe Lateral Canal , in the north and west there are agricultural areas .
The forest area is characterized by the hornbeam and pedunculate oak forest. Alder , ash and quarry forest can also be found in more humid locations . The expansion of the Neetze and the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal in the 1960s led to the absence of the flooding of the forest area that had previously occurred and to a large-scale lowering of the groundwater. By means of water retention measures, the forest community in the nature reserve is to be brought back to such more humid locations.
The 29.9 hectare natural forest reserve of the same name, designated in 1987, is part of the nature reserve. This is predominantly characterized by alder-ash forest and is protected from direct human influences. The forest in the rest of the protected area is managed in a forestry manner, taking into account the formation and maintenance of near-natural forest communities.
The area has been a nature reserve since January 2nd, 1988. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Lüneburg.
