The Neetze is a 53 kilometer long right tributary of the Ilmenau and rises in the state forest of Göhrde in Lower Saxony, southeast of Dahlenburg .
course
The Neetze flows in a north-westerly direction and flows into Fahrenholz, east of Winsen (Luhe) , into the Ilmenau, which has been developed into the Ilmenau Canal here.
The river has several branches. The Neetze Canal branches off northwest of Neetze and flows into the Ilmenau west of Barum ( Lage ). Between Echem and Lüdershausen the river expands to the Reihersee and in the northeast of Barum to the Barumer See .
River engineering
In the 19th century, the Neetze Canal was built between Walmsworth near Rullstorf and St. Dionys, which takes in most of the Neetze water. The original Neetze between Walmsworth and Echem was dismantled and is now partially only recognizable as a wide moat. Only when the Marschwetter and Bruchwetter confluence at Echem does the old Neetze become a real river again. Also at Echem, the Neetze crosses under the Elbe Lateral Canal built in the 1970s .
Water quality
The Neetze has the water quality II: moderately polluted (betamesosaprob), with the exception north of Dahlenburg. Here the water quality II – III is: critically polluted (beta to alphamesosaprobic). The cause is the entry through the Strachau tributary. This stream is heavily polluted in places (quality class III).
