The Vollbütteler Riede , also Mühlenriede, Mönchsgraben or Druffelbach, is a brook on the central Papenteich plateau between Braunschweig and Gifhorn . The brook flows into the Allerkanal via the Alte Hehlenriede and is part of the Weser river system . In the Middle Ages, the brook represented the border between the Diocese of Hildesheim and the Diocese of Halberstadt for a long time .

topography

The brook rises north of Rethen and east of Adenbüttel and is immediately used as a field drainage ditch. The stream first flows about a kilometer in an easterly direction and then slowly bends in a northerly direction, past Algesbüttel, Warmbüttel and Vollbüttel . After the brook has passed Vollbüttel, it flows into the "old Hehlenriede", the former river bed of the Hehlenriede into which the Rötgesbütteler Riede already flowed shortly before . The construction of the Allerkanal changed the stream underflows, so that parts of the former Hehlenriede now only exist as underflows of other streams. The Vollbütteler Riede flows over the "old Hehlenriede" into the Allerkanal.

history

In the early days the brook was in the northern forest . The first settlements were probably established in this area from the 8th century. From the 11th century, the ownership of the area between the Diocese of Halberstadt and the Diocese of Hildesheim was disputed. The bishops of Halberstadt tried unsuccessfully for a long time to move the border further east and define the Oker as the border river. Ultimately, however, they agreed on the Vollbütteler Riede as a natural border between the dioceses. To secure its influence, a chain of villages was founded on the banks of the vineyard, presumably at the behest of the people of Halberstadt. Most of these places probably fell desolate between the 14th and 15th centuries and today only exist as desolations in the Papenteich . Only Algesbüttel was later repopulated as a single farm. The border disputes only ended with the Reformation in the 16th century .

Flora and fauna

The Vollbütteler Riede was for a long time a strongly straightened and artificially deepened body of water. Additional pollution occurred due to the "Schweinweide" garbage dump on the upper reaches of the upper reaches of the river, north of Rethen and used until 1973. The renaturation of the upper reaches only started in the 1990s. Quiet zones were created and zones with fast flowing water were created by means of floor falls . In addition, attempts were made to redesign the course of the stream to meander . The embankments were densely planted, mostly with alders . In the subsequent floodplain of the vineyard, near Vollbüttel , agriculture is carried out on the edge of the vineyard. But there are also larger deciduous forests in the catchment area of the Riede.

As is usual in the Lüneburg Heath, the bottom of the water consists of sand and fine gravel. The water quality report of the state of Lower Saxony classifies the upper reaches of the Mühlenriede as only moderately polluted (quality class II). Only the underflow is classified as critically polluted (quality class II-III).

Despite the relatively good water quality, typical running water organisms are largely absent in the Vollbütteler Riede. Nevertheless, there are 10 animal species that are on the Red List of Lower Saxony:
