Hahntal and Höckels is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon communities of Gevensleben and Jerxheim in the combined community of Heeseberg in the Helmstedt district .

The nature reserve with the registration NSG BR 020 is about 14  hectares . It is completely part of the FFH area “Heeseberg area”. The area has been under protection since July 22, 2014 (date of regulation: July 16, 2014). It replaces the previous nature reserve "Hahntal", which was designated as of September 16, 1979 (date of regulation: August 22, 1979). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Helmstedt district.

The nature reserve, which consists of two parts, is located north and northeast of Watenstedt . It is primarily a southeast exposed slope of red sandstone of aces -Heesebergsattels in Ostbraunschweigischen hills under protection, from a dry brush and older fruit tree stocks interspersed dry grassland is embossed. Warmth-loving ruderal corridors can be found on the upper edge of the slope . In the eastern part there is a small body of water surrounded by bushes and lawns.

In the nature reserve u. a. Spring Adonis , Danish tragacanth , Haarpfriemengras , Hungarian Schafgarge , Wallis fescue , Genuine sheep fescue , hawkweed , cypress spurge , Centaurea scabiosa and Eryngium Campestre ago.

The area is of particular importance because numerous plant species reach their western limit of distribution here and are unique in terms of their occurrence in northwest Germany. The area is to be secured and developed with its plant and animal species bound to dry and warm locations.

As a result of the enlargement of the nature reserve, more fallow land and adjacent agricultural areas have been included in the nature reserve. The area to the north of Watenstedt is traversed by a paved farm road that delimited the protected area to the east before it was enlarged. A hiking trail runs through part of the protected area .
