The Lappwald is a nature reserve in the municipality-free area of Helmstedt in the Helmstedt district in Lower Saxony .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG BR 106 is 495  hectares . It is part of the FFH area "Forests and whistle grass meadows in the southern Lappwald". The “Walbecker Warte” natural forest reserve, designated in 1972, and the 59.7 hectare “Butterberg” natural forest reserve, designated in 1996, are part of the nature reserve. In the north and east it borders directly on the nature reserve " Bachtäler des Lappwaldes " in Saxony-Anhalt , in the south and west on the landscape protection area "Lappwald". The area has been a nature reserve since May 4, 1993. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Helmstedt district.

The nature reserve is located northeast of Helmstedt within the Elm-Lappwald nature park . It puts part of the Lappwald under protection. The nature reserve is characterized by the beech forest , oak-hornbeam forest and alder-ash forest , which predominantly grow on impermeable, clayey deposits of the Keuper and Jura . The impermeable soil leads to widespread alternating moisture. Sometimes there are also coniferous forests that are not typical of the location .

The valleys of the naturally meandering streams of the Roten Riede, the Düsterbeek and the Riole with their tributaries run through the forest area . The forests in the valleys of the Roten Riede and the Düsterbeek are to be developed into natural forests and then left to their natural succession , as is the case with the existing natural forest reserves - the natural forest "Walbecker Warte" in the south and the natural forest "Butterberg" in the west of the nature reserve - is already the case. In the rest of the nature reserve, the near-natural deciduous forest, which is used extensively for forestry, is to be preserved and developed.

In the south, the historic Hildesheimer Landwehr runs through the nature reserve. In its course, the ruins of two waiting towers that have been designated as cultural monuments , the 1st and 2nd Walbecker Warte, have been preserved.
