The postage stamp year 1984 of the Deutsche Post of the German Democratic Republic comprised 48 individual special stamps , four stamp blocks with one special stamp each and two miniature sheets with a total of seven special stamps. One of these stamps was also issued as a single motif. Fourteen postage stamps were printed together; there were five pairs with an interior decorative field. No definitive stamps were issued this year . A total of 72 motifs appeared.

All postage stamp issues since 1964 as well as the 2- mark values of the definitive series President Wilhelm Pieck and the definitive series of State Council Chairman Walter Ulbricht , published since 1961, originally had unlimited postage validity . With the reunification after October 2, 1990, all brands lost their validity.

Twelve motifs alone paid tribute to the founding of the GDR 35 years ago, including three stamp pads.

1984 Summer Olympics

As in every year since 1956, the GDR's Deutsche Post was planning issues with motifs from the Olympic Games .

Due to the boycott of the games by the Soviet Union and eighteen other real socialist states, the stamps were not issued. Four motifs are known to have been designed and printed; these were considered destroyed. In 1988 stamps of this series were sold at the post office of the Leipziger Messe .
