Stamp pads of the German Post of the GDR
From 1949 to 1990, the GDR's Deutsche Post issued a total of 97 stamp blocks. The Lipsia stamp catalog of the GDR started counting with number 1, the Michel catalog started with block 7; the six stamp blocks of the former Soviet occupation zone are treated differently. This article uses Michel numbering. The reason for the issue was predominantly political events or honors of people on special anniversaries, there were also some blocks on the subject of space travel , the Olympic Games or the Leipzig trade fair .
The vast majority of the blocks were perforated so that the individual stamps could easily be separated from the block. In 1953 there were two editions of the 14 cut blocks with the same motif, with and without the possibility of dividing. In 1976 the last of these blocks appeared with an implied, printed perforation ( block 44 ).
The issue price of the miniature sheets was often higher than the face value in the early years of the GDR , the last time in 1967 with sheet number 26 .
A peculiarity can be found in the transcription of block 32 , a typo : ... WE SWEAR TO FIGHT FOR ...
Two of the blocks that appeared towards the end of the GDR had their own individually printed numbering: block 97 and 100 .
The format of the stamp blocks was different, the largest edition appeared with block 19 on the 15th anniversary of the GDR and was almost the size of a DIN A4 sheet of paper .
