The 1978 postage stamps issued by Deutsche Post of the German Democratic Republic comprised 67 individual special stamps , two stamp blocks each with one special stamp and two miniature sheets with a total of 12 special stamps. Twenty postage stamps were printed together; there were three pairs with an interior decorative field. Definitive stamps were not issued in this year. There were 101 different editions in total.

All postage stamp issues since 1964 as well as the 2- mark values ​​of the definitive series President Wilhelm Pieck and the definitive series of State Council Chairman Walter Ulbricht , published since 1961, originally had unlimited postage validity . With the reunification after October 2, 1990, all brands lost their validity.
