The 1980 stamp year of the GDR's Deutsche Post comprised 55 individual special stamps , five stamp blocks each with a special stamp and a miniature sheet with a total of six special stamps. Eighteen postage stamps were printed together; there were three pairs with an interior decorative field.

The GDR Deutsche Post issued ten definitive stamps this year . A total of 94 motifs appeared.

All postage stamp issues since 1964 as well as the 2- mark values ​​of the definitive series President Wilhelm Pieck and the definitive series of State Council Chairman Walter Ulbricht , published since 1961, originally had unlimited postage validity . With the reunification after October 2, 1990, all brands lost their validity.
