The postage stamp year 1979 of the German Post Office of the German Democratic Republic comprised 66 individual special stamps , three stamp blocks with one special stamp each and two miniature sheets with a total of nine special stamps. 12 stamps were printed together; there were two pairs with an interior decorative field. Definitive stamps were not issued in this year. A total of 90 motifs were issued.

Five of these motifs honored the 30th anniversary of the founding of the GDR ; on the 20th anniversary ten years earlier it was seventeen.

All postage stamp issues since 1964 as well as the 2- mark values ​​of the definitive series President Wilhelm Pieck and the definitive series of State Council Chairman Walter Ulbricht , published since 1961, originally had unlimited postage validity . With the reunification after October 2, 1990, all brands lost their validity.
