The garden dahlia ( Dahlia × hortensis ) is a species of the genus Dahlia ( Dahlia ) in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

features

The garden dahlia is a perennial herbaceous plant with tuberous roots that reach heights of 15 to 160 centimeters.

The flowers are red, purple, orange, light and dark purple, yellow, white, cream or pink in color.

The flowering period extends from July to October, rarely from May.

use

The garden dahlia is widely used as an ornamental plant in borders and summer borders and as a cut flower and for flower pots, tubs and bowls. In Germany it was first cultivated as a tuber.

origin

The garden dahlia ( Dahlia × hortensis ) is originally a hybrid of the scarlet dahlia ( Dahlia coccinea ) and the large-feathered dahlia ( Dahlia pinnata ). In 1817 there were already more than 100 varieties. The first garden dahlia in Germany with double flowers was in 1808. From 1832, the white-flowered Dahlia scapigera , which is involved in the development of low varieties, was also crossed. Around 20,000 varieties have been described to date.

There are 10 groups of varieties (England, UK: 14 [RHS]):

  • Simple dahlias
  • Anemone-flowered dahlias
  • Peony flowered dahlias
  • Ball dahlias
  • Cactus dahlias (if the ends of the rays are forked: deer antler dahlias)
  • Semicactus dahlias
  • Jewelry dahlias
  • Pompom dahlias
  • Frill dahlias
  • Mixed dahlias
