The Ottenkirche was a church building in Stettin that existed from 1346 to 1575 . It was consecrated to Saint Otto von Bamberg , the apostle of the Pomerania. At the Ottenkirche there was a collegiate monastery from 1346 to 1541 , the Ottenkapitel .

Building history

The Ottenkirche was built between 1346 and 1347. After a dispute between the city of Stettin and Duke Barnim III. (1303–1368) the city had to undertake to build a stone house, a stone church building and a surrounding wall for the duke in Stettin. This church building was consecrated to Saint Otto von Bamberg , the apostle of Pomerania.

The building was a three-aisled hall church . The choir in the east remained unfinished. A west tower originally belonged to the church building, but it was demolished in 1500 due to its disrepair and replaced by a wooden belfry. The building had a ridge turret .

The Ottenkirche became the court church of the Pomeranian dukes , also thanks to its proximity to the Szczecin Castle . In the Ottenkirche there was a princely crypt , the burial place of numerous Pomeranian dukes from the Greifenhaus .

As Duke Barnim IX. Had the Szczecin Palace expanded around 1538, plans were already being made to demolish the Ottenkirche. However, it was initially renewed in 1538. Duke Johann Friedrich, however, had the Szczecin Palace thoroughly rebuilt around 1575. In 1575 the Ottenkirche was then demolished. It was replaced by the new castle church in Stettin , into which the burial place of the Pomeranian dukes was also integrated.

Otten chapter

In the course of the construction of the Ottenkirche, Duke Barnim III. 1346 at the church a collegiate monastery , the Ottenkapitel, also called Ottenstift. This consisted of a vice dean and eight canons . The Ottenkapitel and the Marienstift existing at the Marienkirche became the most important and richest religious bodies in Szczecin. Their wealth was also favored by the tax exemption granted to them.

The Otten chapter was abolished in 1541, a few years after the introduction of the Reformation . The assets of the Otten Chapter and the previous Marienstift were combined into a new foundation, which established a Princely Pedagogy in Stettin in 1543, which developed into the prestigious Marienstiftsgymnasium .
