The garden petunia ( Petunia × hybrida ) is a species of petunia ( Petunia ). It originated in England in the 19th century as a hybrid of the two species Petunia axillaris and Petunia integrifolia .

The “Lena Amarena” variety was named Bavarian Balcony Plant of the Year 2010.

description

The garden petunia is an annual plant that reaches heights of 20 to 70 centimeters. The leaves are ovate to elliptical and have sticky glandular hairs. The leaf stalks are 2 to 6 inches long. The lower petioles are often winged. The coronet is colored differently. The crown has a diameter of 4 to 12 centimeters and is more or less radiant. The corolla lobes are blunt to pointed.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

use

The garden petunia is widely used as an ornamental plant for borders, tubs, window boxes and planters. It is the most common petunia found in culture. Already in the 19th century it was intensively cultivated, also in Germany. Numerous varieties are known today. The garden petunia is one of the most important ornamental plants in Europe.
