Bantams are small chickens . They are among the most popular pets in the world and are more common there than their larger counterparts. All are from the junglefowl ( Gallus gallus ), the Red comb chicken decreases.

origin

Old English dwarf fighters

Domestic chickens are described in Chinese scriptures more than 4800 years ago. Bantams are first mentioned in the writings of Greek and Roman writers more than 2000 years ago. Her illustrations, however, are only a few hundred years old.

At that time, pedigree poultry breeding gained in importance in Europe and in Germany and Great Britain, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, targeted breeding began with the dwelling of large breeds of chickens . The bantam breeds that were created as miniature versions of the large breed through targeted breeding include the Old English dwarf fighter , the Bielefeld dwarf kennel , the Frankfurt bantam and many others.

But there are also older breeds of bantam, the actual or original bantam, which are also called "primitive dwarfs". They include the really small ones among the dwarves, such as the Chabo from Japan and the Dwarf Cochin , which were only allowed to be kept in the imperial gardens of China. In addition, Barbu d'Anvers , Bantams , German Bantams , Federfüßige Bantams , Ruhlaer Bantams , Sebrights , Seramas and Barbu de Watermael known.

Features and usage

Hen of one of the dwarfed dwarf breeds, the dwarf Dresdeners.
Rooster of the breed “German Zwerghuhn” in the color “red saddled”.

The weight of the bantams varies greatly from breed to breed. There are breeds of 500 to 600 grams (Serama, Bantam), others weigh up to 1.8 kilograms ( dwarf Malay ) and thus even outperform light chicken breeds, such as the Annaberger Haubenstrupphuhn (1.5 kg). What they all have in common is a strong development of the chest muscle.

In contrast to the dwarf races, the concept of utility was never in the foreground with the original dwarfs. They served and serve above all for ornament. Their laying performance generally fluctuates between 25 and 40 eggs per year. In the "miniature versions of the large breeds", such as the dwarf Wyandottes , dwarf Dresdeners and dwarf Rhodelanders , the laying capacity is up to 180 eggs per year and is comparable to that of their larger models. Some lay eggs weighing up to 60 grams. Nevertheless, the performances of pronounced laying breeds such as Italians , Leghorns (200 pieces each), New Hampshire (220 pieces) or the Bielefeld Kennhuhn (230 pieces) are not achieved. But even with the dwarfed chickens there are breeds which, because of their egg production, should be counted among the actual bantam chickens and for which beauty and ornament are in the foreground. These are in particular the dwarf Yokohama , the East Frisian dwarf seagulls and the dwarf hamburgers .

Some breeds of bantam are only recognized in one ( dwarf Andalusian , blue-lined) or two colors ( dwarf Brakel in silver and gold). Others come in almost 30 different colors and drawings (e.g. dwarf Wyandottes , with 29 different colors recognized in the Bund Deutscher Rassegeflügelzüchter (BDRG) and eight more in other European breeding associations), to which new ones are constantly being added or other breeds be transmitted.
