Serama
The Serama - chicken is the smallest known dwarf chicken breed in the world.
Origins and Distribution
The origins of the breed are in Malaysia , but the history of its origins is largely unclear. Outside of Malaysia, there is a growing interest among poultry lovers in other parts of Asia . In the western world, especially in the USA , but also in Europe such as Great Britain and the Netherlands , there are now numerous lovers' clubs. In Germany, too, Seramas are enjoying increasing popularity as a house - more than as farm animals .
General
Seramas are considered trusting and comparatively calm, the roosters do not have a particularly pronounced voice volume. Since the species is much more sensitive to cold and moisture than most other chicken breeds, these animals are only suitable for year-round free-range husbandry with reservations . However, keeping the animals in their homes, as practiced in some places, does not benefit the animals' needs either. Life expectancy is approx. 8 years with good care.
breed
The hens are sexually mature at around 15 weeks. They lay all year round if they are housed appropriately and in accordance with the weather; on average, a clutch consists of 4–8 eggs. Serama chicken eggs are significantly smaller than ordinary chicken eggs.
The only valid breed standard so far was set in the USA by the World Serama Federation . The breeding focus is primarily on posture, size and the very trusting character of the animals. Their color, however, is largely irrelevant.
This breed has been recognized in Europe since 2009.
