Postage stamps from 1958 issued by the GDR Deutsche Post

![]() Inauguration of the Buchenwald Michel National Memorial, block number 15 |
In the 1958 stamps issued by the GDR Deutsche Post , 52 special stamps were brought to the post office counters, significantly more than in the previous year (41 values). 4 definitive stamps also appeared.
The year includes 53 motifs; 8 special stamps and block 15 had to pay a surcharge of between 5 and 20 pfennigs (total: 0.95 DM ).
Since 1955 , a value, and almost all were in most special stamp sets usually block and from 1962 appeared little sheet issues in significantly reduced edition printed. These so-called values in small circulation were, apart from a delivery limited to two items per postal customer, on the first day of issue and on the first day after the expiry of the collection period, only with a collector's pass at the post office counters or via a direct purchase from the dispatch point of the Deutsche Post available in Berlin . In this brand year, the circulation of these values was 1,100,000 or 1,400,000 (only Mi.-No. 657) pieces. Of Block 15, however, only 440,000 were printed.
All stamps of this year were printed on paper with the watermark no. 3 ( GDR around Kreuzblume ).
The editions were generally valid until March 31, 1960. Block 15 and the expenses for the construction of national memorials (Wed. 635-639, 651) could be used one year longer. The postal use of the 5-year plan definitive stamps ended on December 31, 1962. The 2 DM Pieck stamp was even valid until October 2, 1990, the end of the GDR and its post.
particularities
- Special stamps
- The GDR Post paid tribute to the birthdays of Heinrich Zille and Max Planck as well as the 1st anniversary of Otto Nuschke's death. The publication of the didactic writings of the pedagogue Amos Comenius 300 years ago and the founding of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena 400 years ago as a result of the Schmalkaldic War of 1547 were reflected in the brand image.
- The economic development of the GDR was honored with issues on the Markkleeberg (Agra) agricultural exhibition and the construction of the Rostock overseas port, which opened in 1960 .
- Above all, the issues on the 40th anniversary of the November Revolution and the founding of the Communist Party as well as on the 5th party congress of the SED and the 10th anniversary of the pioneer organization "Ernst Thälmann" reflected the political aspirations of the still young state. With the 20 Pf value on the 40th anniversary of the November Revolution, however, the Post made a design mistake: The NVA soldier depicted had a complexion that was clearly too dark, so that the stamp was withdrawn on the day of issue, from around 3 p.m. . However, half of the print run had already been sold by this time.
- Definitive stamps
- In the fifth edition of the 5-year plan series, which was only published in 1957 - already with new watermark paper No. 3 - the replacement by 3 values with changed perforation began that year. The definitive series “President Wilhelm Pieck” (4th edition) was supplemented and thus completed by a 2 DM value. Not until 1963 were market values to follow a permanent series again - now with the portrait of the Chairman of the State Council Walter Ulbricht .
