Leipziger Messe on postage stamps of the GDR Deutsche Post

800 years of the Leipziger Messe

Just six months after the founding of the GDR , the GDR's Deutsche Post issued the first stamps on the occasion of the Leipzig Trade Fair with motifs based on historical fair scenes. The design of the motif thus tied in with the postage stamps issued by the Allied Control Council in 1947 and in spring 1948 and by the Soviet military administration in autumn 1948 and 1949. The tradition of trade fair brands continued until the end of the GDR in 1990. This means that the postage stamps for the Leipziger Messe are the longest-issued series of topics by the GDR Deutsche Post . A total of 154 motifs were issued, including two stamp pads. The first two issues were sold with a hammer. The graphic artist Erich Gruner , who created the trade fair landmark MM for Mustermesse in 1917 , also designed the first stamp issues. This symbol adorns all motifs up to 1990.

In the first two years of the edition there were only motifs for the Leipzig Spring Fair, followed by three years for the Leipzig Autumn Fair. From 1955 both trade fairs were honored annually with postage stamps.

The Association of German Philatelists has its own working group on the subject: Leipziger Messe Philatelie .

Worth mentioning

• There were special stamps for the Leipzig trade fair from 1940 to 1950 .
• The GDR postage stamps for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, which had not been issued due to the GDR's Olympic boycott, were inadvertently sold at the exhibition post office.

• The trade fair stamps planned for the fall fair in 1990 were to appear as a block with two special stamps of 50 and 85 pfennigs and for the first time had a motif by Georg Emanuel Opiz , the picture “The shops” from the “Mass scenes” (1825). Due to the upcoming reunification , they were no longer issued.
