Großer Blumenberg (also Großer Blumberg ) is the name of a residential and commercial building in Leipzig . The current building is the work of the architect Albert Geutebrück (1801–1868). It is one of the few surviving examples of classicist architectural style in the center of Leipzig.

Location and building description

The Große Blumenberg delimits the south side of Richard-Wagner-Platz and has the address Richard-Wagner-Platz 1. It is a four-story building with a short side wing along the Große Fleischergasse and a slightly longer one on the west side.

The main front to the square, about 56 meters long, has 17 window axes. The central risalit with a triangular gable is structured by four pilasters with Corinthian capitals . The main cornice is toothed , and acroteria sit on the window roofs . On the ground floor zone with ashlar plaster there are restored so-called Schinkel gas lights from around 1900 that have been converted to electrical operation. The building has a hipped roof with some small semicircular dormers .

The twelve-axis western wing has an unadorned central projection with a triangular gable, six axes wide. Attached to the neighboring building on Grosse Fleischergasse, Grosse Blumenberg also has a four-storey half - timbered building that forms a courtyard with the main and short side wings. It is eight window axes wide and only one window axis deep.

history

In 1525 the owner of the corner building at Große Fleischergasse was named Tiburtius Blumberg and in 1549 Caspar Blumberg, whose heirs sold the house to Gregor Stiel in 1572. The house name appears for the first time in 1591 as "Innkeeper zum Plumberg". In 1714, Johann Christian Ehlich combined the property with another house in Grosse Fleischergasse. In 1767, to differentiate between the two, the name Zum Großen Blumenberg appears for the first time in the council book for the main house and the other one, Zum kleine Blumenberg . Zum Großer Blumenberg was one of the leading tourist establishments in the trade fair city in the 18th century.

Along the square in the direction of the Ranisches Tor , the Ranisches bathhouse was connected to the large mountain of flowers . Here the dyer's floor served as a theater hall for a master cooper until 1776. Friederike Caroline Neuber (1697–1760), the Neuberin, also appeared in this hall with her theater troupe and played the last of her Leipzig performances here in the 1749/1750 season.

From 1826 to 1832, following the demolition of several buildings on the site, the new building that still exists today was built on the site, which is now called “Theaterplatz” because of the old theater opposite, according to plans by city planning director Albert Geutebrück. In addition to numerous shops, it housed the "Café Ziegler" founded in 1897, which was later called "Café am Alten Theater". From 1857 to 1859 the patron Ferdinand Rhode lived in the Großer Blumenberg.

The building was partially destroyed during the Second World War ; especially the western part was affected. It was rebuilt from 1961 to 1964, the facade was repaired in 1978/1979 and further refurbished between 2001 and 2003. During the GDR era, the café on the ground floor was called "Café am Brühl". For the Leipzig autumn fair in 1979 the Große Blumenberg appeared as a motif on a special postage stamp.

From 2014 to 2015 the building was again extensively restored. Its facade shines again in new splendor. Today the house is used for offices, restaurants and shops. There is currently a café and a Mexican restaurant on the ground floor and a wine bar in the half-timbered building in the courtyard .
