The paintings in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie returned from the USSR are the title of three series of stamps issued by the GDR 's Deutsche Post in 1955, 1957 and 1959 . The GDR universal catalog lists the series under the titles of art treasures rescued and returned by the USSR from the Dresden gallery and the return of the rescued art treasures from the Dresden gallery by the USSR . All brands have a uniform presentation and were designed by Erich Gruner . They alone make up about a sixth of all postage stamps of the GDR Deutsche Post, which show exhibits from museums in Dresden .

The reason for the issue was the return of the paintings that had been looted to the Soviet Union after the Second World War .
