The Zinsgroschen is an oil painting by Tiziano Vecellio from around 1516. It is in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden .

description

The painting is 75 cm × 56 cm in size. Christ is shown with a Pharisee . It illustrates the dialogue of the interest penny according to Mt 22 : 15–22  LUT , in which Jesus answers the trick question whether the Jews should pay taxes to the Roman emperor: Give the emperor what is the emperor's and God what is God's.

history

Titian made the painting for Duke Alfonso I d'Este of Ferrara. The wooden panel is said to have been set into a cupboard in the Duke's study.

In 1597 the painting came to Modena after the death of the last Duke of Ferrara . From there it was bought by King August III in 1745 . of Poland for its collection.
