The 1964 stamps issued by Deutsche Post of the German Democratic Republic comprised 61  special stamps , four stamp blocks with 18 special stamps and one definitive stamp . A total of 80 motifs were issued. 16 postage stamps were also printed together.

A special feature of this year are the triangular issues, these are unique among German postage stamps. This format the usual array of 10 x 10 or 5 x 10 marks per could stamp sheetlet not be selected five brands were each in Kehrdruck printed arrangement.

The largest block of stamps ever issued in the GDR (and also in German postal history) had the theme of 15 Years of the GDR . Its dimensions were 21 × 28.5 cm, which made them almost the size of a DIN A4 sheet of paper (21 × 29.7 cm), and it was not gummed . The stamps had no perforation ( cut ); they therefore had to be cut out for postal use. His individual motifs were also issued in rubberized and perforated counter sheets (in the Michel catalog under the letter A ; the cut ones: B ).

Since 1955 , a value, and almost all were in most special stamp sets usually block and from 1962 appeared little sheet issues in significantly reduced edition printed. These so-called values in small circulation were, apart from a delivery limited to two items per postal customer, on the first day of issue and on the first day after the expiry of the collection period, only with a collector's pass at the post office counters or via a direct purchase from the dispatch point of the Deutsche Post available in Berlin . In this brand year, the circulation of these values was 1,200,000 copies. Block 21 with 1.6 million, block 22 with 1.7 million and the miniature sheet with 2 million pieces were printed in a slightly increased edition.

All postage stamp issues since this year as well as the 2- mark values of the definitive series of President Wilhelm Pieck and the definitive series of state council chairman Walter Ulbricht , published since 1961, were originally valid for unlimited postage . With the reunification after October 2, 1990, all brands lost their validity.

A supplementary value for the Walter Ulbricht permanent series was issued.

particularities

Special stamps

The series “ International memorials and memorials ”, started in 1963 and running until 1989 with mostly one value each, was continued . The postage rates of 25 and, from 1974 , 35 pfennigs, which were almost exclusively used, were used to frank postcards and simple letters in international traffic, so that the anti-fascist state doctrine of the GDR was to be demonstrated abroad by post.

Definitive stamps

The definitive stamp that appeared had a face value of 60 pfennigs, with which the postage for simple local letters with the additional services " registered mail " or " express delivery " could be paid for with a postage stamp.
