The postage stamp year 1953 of the Deutsche Post of the German Democratic Republic comprised 33 individual special stamps and four stamp blocks with a total of twenty special stamps. 38 definitive stamps were issued this year .

The Michel catalog distinguishes 81 different editions through multiple editions of the same motif.

particularities

Special stamps

On the 70th anniversary of Karl Marx's death, ten special stamps were issued at the beginning of the year. The motifs were used again in two stamp pads towards the end of the year . These pads came in two editions: perforated and cut. All blocks had an issue price of 2.50 DM, so there was a surcharge of 1.05 DM for Block 8 and a surcharge of 80 Pfennig for Block 9.

Unsold remainders of the two perforated block editions were post-officially trimmed centrally in Berlin and from March 10, 1955 they were sold at face value without surcharge.

Definitive stamps

This year the issue of a new series of definitive stamps began. The originally planned edition in book printing was only issued towards the end of the year due to production bottlenecks at the time; in August the motifs appeared in offset printing .
