Space travel on postage stamps of the GDR Deutsche Post

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The successes of Soviet space travel were recognized by the German Post of the GDR with 76 stamps and 7 stamp blocks on this topic. The first issue appeared just 33 days after the start of Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957. The first German cosmonaut Sigmund Jähn , who took off into space on August 26, 1978, was featured in the brand image several times. The last three motifs appeared on October 2, 1990, one day before German reunification .

The stamps issued almost exclusively show motifs from Soviet space travel ; American space successes, in particular the Apollo program and the moon landings , were generally not shown. US space travel was only mentioned in the 1975 issue for the Soviet-American space company Soyuz-Apollo .
