The 500th birthday of Martin Luther was approved by the Deutsche Post of the GDR in the years 1982 / 83 with stamp issues appreciated. The issued miniature sheet depicting Martin Luther as Junker Jörg is individually numbered.

The motifs were designed by Gerhard Schmidt.

All stamps issued since 1964 , as well as the definitive series of state council chairman Walter Ulbricht issued in 1963 , originally had unlimited postage validity. With the reunification , these brands lost their validity after October 2, 1990.
