Postage stamps from 1963 from the GDR Deutsche Post

Block edition chemical industry of the GDR
(105 × 74 mm, Michel block number 18)

The 1963 stamps issued by Deutsche Post of the GDR were issued by Deutsche Post in 1963 . As in the 1962 stamp year , one block was issued in 1963 . Four postage stamps were sent to the post office counters in two horizontal prints as well as ten values with a thematically designed side field. Another miniature sheet was only available in the next stamp year .

The year includes 61  special stamps and a block with a total of 63 motifs as well as seven definitive stamps in two drawings. The volume of the issue thus roughly corresponded to the previous year (1962: 65 items). A surcharge of between 5 and 20 pfennigs (1.15 marks in total ) had to be paid for 14 special stamps . The face value of the issues was 19.45 marks.

Since 1955 , a value, and almost all were in most special stamp sets usually block and from 1962 appeared little sheet issues in significantly reduced edition printed. These so-called values in small circulation were, apart from a delivery limited to two items per postal customer, on the first day of issue and on the first day after the expiry of the collection period, only with a collector's pass at the post office counters or via a direct purchase from the dispatch point of the Deutsche Post available in Berlin . This year, the brand circulation was these values 1 100 000 or 1 200 000 pieces.

All stamps of this year were printed on paper with the watermark No. 3 ( GDR around Kreuzblume ), only with the long-term reprinted serial values of 50 and 70  pfennigs , partial editions from 1967 were printed on paper with the watermark No. 1 due to a paper mix-up (Finials). The block has no watermark. The issues were valid for postage until March 31, 1965, with the exception of the definitive stamps that could be used until October 2, 1990 .

particularities

Special stamps

The trade fair stamp sets , which had been trivalent since 1962 , were retained in 1963. For the first time there was an issue for a SED party congress , still with only one stamp - in 1967 for the 7th party congress there should already be 2 sentences with a total of 8 values. Several issues were again dedicated to sport, which had become of growing political importance for the GDR due to its international appeal: the stamps for the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 were sold at the end of the year, then the sports theme with stamps became the German gymnastics and sports festival , to the races of the world championships in motorcycle racing and motocross as well as to the 100th birthday of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games . Finally, the surcharge stamps from the series “Preservation of National Memorials in Former Concentration Camps”, which had been published in two sentences as in the previous year, had been running since the mid-1950s and this year was dedicated to the athletes murdered during the National Socialist rule, with secondary fields with sports motifs . The chemical industry was of fundamental importance for the GDR economy based on its economic tradition. After this had already been honored by post in 1960 with a four-valued set of stamps, a non- gummed pad printed on Dederon fabric reached the counters in 1963 . The series “ International memorials and memorials ”, which ran until 1989, was started that year . The series “Protected Animals”, which only began in 1962, was followed by a continuation of the motif. There were also issues on the 150th anniversary of the wars of liberation , on birthday anniversaries for German writers and opera composers, on visits by Soviet cosmonauts from the GDR and on the international fight against malaria.

Definitive stamps

The penny values of the “Walter Ulbricht” series, which began in 1961, were initially supplemented with 5 postage levels. With the two market values with the currency indication “DM” also issued for this series, the high continuous series denominations were available in a new design for the first time since 1958. The 1-DM-Pieck-stamp of the previous series from 1957 had already been put out of circulation on March 31, 1962, whereas its 2-DM-nominal remained valid until October 2, 1990 parallel to the Ulbricht values.
