Walter Bean

Walter Bohne (born January 9, 1903 in Burg (near Magdeburg) , † January 5, 1944 in Hamburg ) was a communist and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Walter Bohne grew up in the family of a master tailor and eventually became a shipbuilder . In 1921 he joined the Communist Youth Association KJVD and a short time later joined the KPD . As an enthusiastic athlete, he was active in the workers' sports movement, among other things . In 1928 Bohne moved to Hamburg and built up the Red Sports Movement there.

In 1933 he worked illegally, after which he was arrested in 1934 and sentenced to two years in prison. After his release, he sought out former political friends and was able to gather a group of communist workers' athletes around him by 1939. In 1941, Bohne joined the communist resistance group around Bernhard Bästlein and headed the shipyards industrial group.

When he was arrested in October 1942, he resisted and was injured. After the bombing of Hamburg at the end of July 1943, he was able to go into hiding and began to form a resistance group again. When three Gestapo officers tried to arrest him on January 5, 1944 , he resisted them and was shot.

In memory of Walter Bohne, a stumbling block was laid at the site of his murder in Hamburg .
