Buna works in Schkopau

The term Mitteldeutsches Chemiedreieck (only the chemical triangle is used in the region) refers to the industrial conurbation around the cities of Halle (Saale) , Merseburg and Bitterfeld in the state of Saxony-Anhalt . The name is derived from the predominant branch of industry in this region - the chemical and petroleum processing industry.

The chemical triangle Leuna-Buna-Bitterfeld is often referred to as these locations are the oldest and most formative in the region. Buna does not stand for a city Buna, but for the first synthetic rubber that was produced in the specially built Buna works in Schkopau . Today the Dow Olefinverbund in Schkopau produces synthetic rubber, which is marketed under the name BUNA SB.

history

At the end of the 1950s, the advertising slogan “ Plastics and Elastics from Schkopau ” was introduced to advertise the product range of what was then Chemische Werke Buna. The slogan was mainly found on advertising posters and as illuminated advertising. Probably the best-known illuminated advertising was attached to a tower at the northern bridgehead of the Elbe bridge Vockerode as part of the transit route Berlin - Hof (now federal motorway 9 ).

The partial retention of the locations after 1990 by the Treuhandanstalt required high investments of approx. 1 million DM per job and was politically controversial, especially because the research and development potential of the region was considered worn out. From the point of view of politics, such as the then IG Chemie-Papier-Keramik, the fact that the workforce or residents were “chemically experienced” spoke in favor of maintaining the location.
