Pond turtle
The division of living beings into systematics is a continuous subject of research. Different systematic classifications exist side by side and one after the other. The taxon treated here has become obsolete due to new research or is not part of the group systematics presented in the German-language Wikipedia.
The pond turtles (Emydidae) are a traditional family of turtles . Investigations in the 1960s split them into two separate, not closely related families, which differ in the construction of the skull and the shell, and one of which has retained the scientific name:
- New World pond turtles (Emydidae)
- Old World pond turtles (Geoemydidae) - previously classified as a subfamily of the previous one
The designations are not to be understood as a strict geographical separation. A minority of the New World turtle species live in the Old World , and vice versa. This applies in particular to the emydidae related, occurring in Central Europe European pond turtle , which is meant in the German speaking mostly with the concept.
