The New World pond turtles (Emydidae) differ in the structure of the shell and skull from the Old World pond turtles (Geoemydidae), which were previously included in them. There are about 52 species from 10 genera in the two subfamilies Deirochelyinae and Emydinae.
distribution
As the name suggests, the New World pond turtles live in the New World, i.e. in North , Central and South America . One species, however, the European pond turtle ( Emys orbicularis ), lives in southern and central Europe, in North Africa and in Turkey to northern Iran . It is also the only naturally occurring turtle in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . But there are only rare local remnants. The population found in Sicily represents another European species, the Sicilian pond turtle ( Emys trinacris ).
Way of life
Most New World pond turtles lead an aquatic, water-bound life. The diamond turtle ( Malaclemys terrapin ) also walks in brackish water. The box turtles ( Terrapene ) live more terrestrially, on land.
