The American water turtles ( Glyptemys ) are a genus of the New World pond turtles . Two species belong to this genus, the moorland turtle and the forest brook turtle . Until a few years ago, the two species were still included in the genus Clemmys , which today only contains the tropical turtle as a monogeneric genus .

The genus of American turtles is widespread from southeast Canada to the USA. The northern distribution area shows the forest brook turtle, which lives in small bodies of water in deciduous and mixed forests as well as in lakes, ponds, streams, swamps and wet meadows. The range of the moorland turtle, which with a carapace length of 7.6 to 8.9 centimeters is one of the very small representatives of the New World pond turtles, extends in the south to the west of the US state of South Carolina and in the north of Georgia. The moorland turtle is native to low mountain ranges and lives there in shallow ponds, lakes and ponds as well as bogs overgrown with peat moss. The bog turtle is particularly threatened because its habitat is becoming increasingly fragmented and this species is illegally caught for the terrarium trade, among other things.
