The real ear turtles are a genus of turtles in the New World pond turtle family . Their distribution area extends from the southeast of the USA to Mexico. The real ear turtles are mostly found in waters with dense vegetation and are also able to live in brackish water areas. The common ear turtle , which lives mainly in rivers and moats, is one of the best-known real ear turtles . Other species of silver ear turtles also inhabit stagnant waters.

Systematics

The genus of the real ear turtles is usually divided into two sub-genera.

The subgenus Pseudemys (real ear turtles) includes:

  • Common eared turtle ( Pseudemys concinna (Le Conte, 1830)) - central and eastern United States and northern Mexico
  • Rio Grande eared turtle ( Pseudemys gorzugi Ward, 1984) - River system of the Rio Grande in Texas and Mexico and in the Pecos River system in southeast New Mexico and Texas
  • Peninsula eared turtle ( Pseudemys peninsularis Carr, 1938) - Florida Peninsula
  • Texas eared turtle ( Pseudemys texana Baur, 1893) - Central Texas
