Continuous series 5-year plan of the GDR (VII)

In the 1959 stamps issued by the GDR Deutsche Post , the number of special stamps, at 73, increased significantly compared to the previous year (1958: 52 items). Seven definitive stamps also appeared. The year includes 72 motifs. For the first time, stamps with an ornamental field belonging to the motif were issued. Later volumes expanded this to include prints and miniature sheets that contained up to eight stamps in one image.

A surcharge of between 5 and 20 pfennigs (1.05 marks in total ) had to be paid for eleven special stamps . The nominal value of the special editions was 16.35 marks, that of the permanent series 2.30 marks.

Since 1955 , a value, and almost all were in most special stamp sets usually block and from 1962 appeared little sheet issues in significantly reduced edition printed. These so-called values in small circulation were, apart from a delivery limited to two items per postal customer, on the first day of issue and on the first day after the expiry of the collection period, only with a collector's pass at the post office counters or via a direct purchase from the dispatch point of the Deutsche Post available in Berlin . In this brand year, the circulation of these values was 1,100,000 copies.

All stamps of this year were printed on paper with the watermark no. 3 ( GDR around Kreuzblume ).

particularities

  • Special stamps

After an edition consisting of only two stamps drew attention to this event on the 5th anniversary of the founding of the GDR in 1954 , a special edition consisting of 10 values with motifs from all areas of social life should now - in accordance with the anniversary SED and state leadership demonstrated political, economic and social stability in the state 10 years after its establishment. This number of stamps on the anniversary of the GDR's founding was only exceeded once, in 1964 , when a 15-value edition was published. On a five-year existence that could Jugendweihe in East Germany look back after the efforts of the East German leadership primary - instead of the Christian dominated confirmation or confirmation - should the entry of young people into the adult world to express; two stamps were dedicated to her.

The series "Construction of National Memorials in Former Concentration Camps" was continued with a sentence honoring female resistance fighters executed in the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp and a value for the opening of the memorial on September 12, 1959. The KPD, murdered during the November Revolution of 1919, was also remembered -Founders, Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht.

As early as 1956 , the Carl-Zeiss-Werke in Jena received a philatelic award on the occasion of its 110th birthday. Now this year two values appeared on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Jenaer Glaswerke (Jenaer Glaswerk Schott & Genossen), which, in addition to the Zeiss works, also belonged to the Carl Zeiss Foundation . The GDR thus also documented its claim to ownership of these prestigious manufacturing facilities, which, as a result of the Second World War, had a new, legally independent company based in Mainz , in the old Federal Republic, due to the transfer of the Jena plant into public ownership in 1948 .

The 150th birthday of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the days of death of Alexander von Humboldt (100th) and Georg Friedrich Händel (200th) served the GDR Deutsche Post as reasons for issuing two-value sentences. In this stamp year, the third edition (previous editions: 1955 and 1957 ) concluded first the series of paintings in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie returned from the Soviet Union and then with the second movement the series of ancient art treasures returned from the Soviet Union, which began in 1958 . The animal motif collectors were served three sentences in 1959 (nature conservation, bird life and forest animals). Sport also came back into the brand image this year with an edition of 5 values at the German Gymnastics and Sports Festival in Leipzig.

  • Definitive stamps

After the first 3 values in 1958, another 5 values of the VI appeared in finer box perforation . Edition of the 5-year plan series . Initially, the 10 Pf value was always blue, as it had replaced the 12 Pf value, which was also blue, after the postage was lowered in 1954. The change in color to "green" by the GDR Post, which took place up to the beginning of 1956, was now followed by the permanent series, and from July the 10 Pf value (Mi. 704, VII. Edition) was now in blue-green. Amazingly, this was made again in both perforation variants (A and B), although the 10 Pf value grade had already been available with the new box perforation (B variant) since August 1958.
