Andreas Brylka

Andreas Brylka (* 17th September 1931 in Myslowice , Silesia ; † 24. June 2016 in Hamburg ) was a German graphic artist , book designer and Wood engraving - masters .

Brylka designed the GDR “Peregrine Falcon” stamp from the “Domestic Birds” stamp set (1959).

Brylka studied from 1952 at the Leipzig College of Graphics and Book Art with Egon Pruggmayer . In 1957 he was for political reasons in the 10th semester expelled . He then worked as a freelance commercial artist in Leipzig . Brylka designed postage stamps of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). His drafts for the “Domestic Birds” stamp series were accepted in 1958 and appeared in the 1959 stamp year of the GDR Deutsche Post ( Michel numbers 698–703).

In 1959, Brylka fled the GDR to West Germany . Brylka's accepted drafts for GDR postage stamps on the occasion of the Nature Conservation Week in 1960 were already available for printing at the security printer, but were withdrawn at short notice. According to the official justification of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications of the GDR because of "printing problems", actually because of Brylka's "escape from the republic " in the meantime .

After moving to Hamburg, Brylka created book designs and illustrations, especially masterful wood engravings, for well-known publishers such as CH Beck and Manesse in Munich , Insel in Frankfurt am Main or Christians in Hamburg. Brylka also designed collector's editions for small publishers . From 1964 he shaped the appearance of the supplement “The World of Literature” , the forerunner of the “Literary World”. In 1972 he founded the self-publisher "Edition AB".

Awards

Brylka received several prizes and his works have been shown in solo exhibitions and exhibition participations at home and abroad.
