Kurt Christians
Kurt Christians (born October 3, 1909 in Hamburg ; † January 25, 1998 there ) was a German printer and publisher .
Life
Kurt Christians first attended the Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hamburg , which he left with the secondary school leaving certificate. He then completed an apprenticeship as a printer and typesetter in Hamburg and Leipzig and studied at the Leipzig technical college for book printers . Christians worked as a printer in Berlin , Celle and Hamburg and passed his master craftsman examination there. Together with August Gebel as a partner, Christians took over the "Hans Christians Druckerei und Verlag" from his father in 1934. The company, founded by Conrad Wörmer in 1740, had mostly been a printing company and occasionally published books.
Christians and Gebel shifted the focus of the publishing house to commercial printing and published regional publications, including books on Klein Erna , which appeared in large editions, as well as publications on architecture and art. They cooperated with well-known book designers such as Gotthard de Beauclair , Walter Wilkes, Richard von Sichowsky , Otto Rohse and Andreas Brylka and had numerous metal typesetting by important type artists . Due to the high quality of the print they could often the competition of the most beautiful books of the Book Art Foundation win.
Christians was a board member of the Maximilian Society from 1976 until his death and since 1970 honorary senator of the Technical University of Hanover . In 1990 he founded the Kurt-Christans-Förderpreis, which was supposed to support younger book designers. The Christians publishing house, in which his daughter Susanne Liebelt joined in 1971, became insolvent in 2004 and then dissolved.
