memorial
A memorial is a special form of memorial that is intended to remind of a historical event through its public presence . Memorials are intended to create consternation in the viewer and to pass on remembrance over the generations .
Monuments can be artistically designed (e.g. the Holocaust memorial in Berlin) or consist of an object that originally served a different purpose and was rededicated as a memorial after the event to be remembered (e.g. . War Debris). An example of the latter category is the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin , which was preserved as a ruin and is intended to be a conscious reminder of the reasons for its destruction.
More complex facilities of this type, such as the remains of the concentration camps from the time of National Socialism , are more likely to be referred to as memorials .
