First group flight of
the spaceships Vostok 3 and Vostok 4

Michel block number 17

After no blocks and only one overprint were issued in 1961 , there were also four overprints and the first miniature sheet from the GDR in addition to a block for the first group flight in the cosmos for the 1962 stamp year of the GDR. A total of 65  special stamps with 64 motifs, along with the corresponding overlays, but no definitive stamps, came to the post office counters. The output volume was thus slightly increased compared to the previous year (1961: 53 values).

A surcharge of between 5 and 30 pfennigs (1.35 marks in total ) had to be paid for 14 special stamps . The face value of the issues was 15.15 marks.

Since 1955 , most special postage stamp sets have usually had a value as well as almost all miniature sheets and the miniature sheet editions published from this year in a significantly reduced edition. These so-called values in small circulation were, apart from a delivery limited to two items per postal customer, on the first day of issue and on the first day after the expiry of the collection period, only with a collector's pass at the post office counters or via a direct purchase from the dispatch point of the Deutsche Post available in Berlin . In this brand year, the circulation of these values was 1,000,000 or 1,100,000 copies.

All stamps of this year were printed on paper with the watermark No. 3 ( GDR around Kreuzblume ) and were valid for postage until March 31, 1964 .

particularities

The trade fair stamps, which were previously published as single values or sentences with only two brands, were presented in 1962 as three-value sentences. After a long break, there were again stamps for the “peace ride”. A second sports edition, which also appeared as a synopsis, paid tribute to the European Swimming Championships awarded to Leipzig. When the National People's Army was founded in 1956, military service in the GDR was still voluntary; it was not until 1962 that conscription was introduced. This was the occasion for a five-valued edition for the 6th year of its foundation, ie an "out of round" anniversary. The Post continued the series “ Building National Memorials in Former Concentration Camps ”, which had been running since the mid-1950s, with two sentences as in the previous year. The motifs were dominated by the cosmos with a pad and a sheetlet issued for the first time in the GDR. But there were also four values for the protection of species and two three-valued sentences for the Baltic Sea Week in Rostock and the GDR agricultural exhibition "Agra".
