The Mädlerpassage is a covered retail, restoration and service complex located in the city center of Leipzig (Grimmaische Straße / Neumarkt) and at the same time one of the few completely preserved and most magnificent shopping arcades in the trade fair city.

history

The Auerbachs Hof building complex was built on the property between 1530 and 1911 . On January 1, 1911, Auerbach's farm and neighboring property were sold to the suitcase and leather manufacturer Anton Mädler (1864–1925). He had all the buildings demolished and the Mädler-Passage exhibition center built from 1912 to 1914 according to plans by the architect Theodor Kösser .

A five-story through house was built with a 142 m long, four-story passage. The arched portal at the passage entrance is flanked by two life-size female robed figures, carrying grapes and a vase. They refer to the purpose of the house as a wine cellar ( Auerbachs Keller ) and exhibition center for the porcelain, ceramics and earthenware sectors (exhibition area 5,700 m²). Since 1969 there has been a porcelain carillon made of Meissen porcelain in the rotunda of the passage . The Mädler Passage was used as an exhibition center until 1989.

After the fall of the Wall , Jürgen Schneider bought the majority of the property from the Mädler Erbengemeinschaft in 1991 for DM 80 million. He wanted to rehabilitate the passage. That didn't happen after his company went bankrupt. In 1995 Commerzbank took over the majority.

From 1995 to 1997 the passage was extensively renovated and given a new use. Commerzbank sold its majority stake in Mädler-Passage Grundstück GmbH & Co. KG in 2008 to a company of the MIB Group, Berlin / Leipzig. The remaining shares belong to a granddaughter of Anton Mädler.

In addition to the historic Auerbachs Keller in the basement, there are over 20 small shops and restaurants in the passage. The upper floors no longer function as a trade fair location, but offer space for office space and the Sanftwut cabaret, among other things .
