Gerhard Stauf
Gerhard Wilhelm August Stauf (born December 28, 1924 in Burg (near Magdeburg) , † April 25, 1996 in Leipzig ) was a German graphic artist , illustrator and engraver .
Life
Stauf was born in Burg as the son of the painter Heinrich Wilhelm Stauf and his wife Martha Marie. After an apprenticeship as a utility weaver in Magdeburg , which began in 1939 , he completed five semesters of drawing lessons at the evening school at the Master School of German Crafts in Magdeburg . During the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1942. In Africa, Stauf fell into American captivity, from which he returned to Burg in 1950. After a short incapacity for work, he first worked on a woodcut cycle about events in Burger's history. In 1951 he was delegated to study illustration at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig , which he graduated in 1956 and which was followed by an aspirantur until 1959 . His teachers there were, among others, Professor Hans Mayer-Foreyt , Albert Kapr , Karl Krug and his aspirant mentor Heinrich Ilgenfritz . Stauf became a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR and the SED . After completing his training, he worked from 1961 to 1962 as a designer and engraver at the Deutsche Wertpapierdruckerei in Leipzig. He then went into business for himself and worked as a freelance graphic artist and engraver, in particular for the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications in the GDR . In the course of his artistic life he created over 200 stamp motifs, five of which were awarded the Golden Postage Stamp by the specialist magazine Collector-Express . Stauf also worked as an illustrator for book and magazine publishers such as Domowina-Verlag Bautzen or Prisma Verlag Leipzig and produced a large number of commercial graphics for theaters and industry.
As a result of Heinrich Ilgenfritz's influence, a bookplate collection with 76 copies was created from 1958 to 1993 , which mainly contains copper or wood engravings . A large part can be viewed in the Burger City Library.
Stauf took critical note of the political and economic development in the GDR. But he doubted the correctness of the German reunification . No more orders came from the Post Office of the GDR and he had to fight for his economic existence.
Stauf was a member of the Heinrich Schliemann Society. For this he designed the Heinrich Schliemann Medal in 1990. From that year he also worked for a Munich publisher who published a documentary on graphic techniques with originals, for which Stauf produced special works such as the copper engraving with the portrait of Albert Einstein or the ivory engraving based on Jean-Étienne Liotard's The Chocolate Girl .
Stauf participated in many national and international exhibitions and competitions. His works have received numerous awards. In his private life he was friends with the writer Brigitte Reimann .
Stauf was buried in Leipzig-Plagwitz .
