The actinometer is a relative measuring device for direct solar radiation (direct radiation). The actinometer needs by comparison with an absolute instrument, the pyrheliometer , calibrated to be. An older such instrument is the actinometer given by WA Michelson .

Actinometers use chemical changes in certain substances that are used to measure the intensity of the radiation during irradiation . One uses u. a. Bimetal - foils that bend when irradiated in such a way that the intensity can be read off on a measuring scale. The universal actinometer from Franz Linke , in which the receiver consists of a lamella of thin constantan sheet, behind which the active soldering points of a nine-part thermopile made of manganin- constantan are attached. The second soldering points are thermally and electrically insulated on both sides of the lamella. The entire apparatus is built into an aluminum body and has a slide with filter glass at the entrance slit, with a quartz shield serving as a windbreak. The reading is made with a rotary pulse dial galvanometer .
