Pittiplatsch (Koseform Pitti ) and Schnatterinchen ( Kosenform Schnattchen or Schnatterente ) were puppet figures of the German TV broadcaster in the GDR . Schnatterinchen was created by Heinz Schröder and Friedgard kurz and appeared for the first time in 1959 in the weekly series “ Meister Nadelöhr tells fairy tales”. Pittiplatsch had its first appearance on June 17, 1962. In the 1970s, Moppi, the dog, also appeared. Pittiplatsch and Moppi were invented by Ingeborg and Günther Feustel , who also wrote most of the stories. Emma-Maria Lange (1921–2016) designed the dolls .

history

On November 23, 1956, the first episode of this program with Eckart Friedrichson as master tailor Nadelöhr was broadcast. Initially with the canaries Zwirnchen and Röllchen, from 1959 the duck Schnatterinchen and the bear Bummi were part of the program. Three years later, the Kobold Pittiplatsch appeared, led and spoken by Heinz Schröder . However, some educators feared that the children could only learn stupidities from the character Pittiplatsch. That's why the character was taken off the show after only two episodes. After numerous protests, Pittiplatsch reappeared at Christmas 1962, visually slightly changed and verbally somewhat more adapted. Bummi was replaced in 1975 by the Teddy Mischka or Mischka bear , who as a good, hardworking student had the same traits as him.

The stories with Pittiplatsch were also broadcast on Saturday in the evening greeting of the GDR children's program Unser Sandmännchen . The scenery here was always the garden. The stories that are only a few minutes long as part of the evening greeting broadcasts show Pittiplatsch mostly in dialogue with Schnatterinchen and the dog Moppi. Moppi was a fat and naughty dog ​​with a wrinkled face, similar to a pug who usually persuaded Pitti to do bad pranks. At the end of the evening greeting, Schnatterinchen mostly converted the two rascals, who then repented their crimes and swore to get better. In any case, this was true for Pitti, and Moppi was stubborn from time to time.

Eleven television productions under the title Pitti travels to Koboldland tell of Pittiplatsch's travels to his Kobold grandmother in Koboldland. Other characters in these puppet films are the goblins Nickeneck, Drehrumbum der Runde and Wuschel. In 1964 a series of stamps (designed by Werner Klemke ) appeared in the GDR for the day of the child , which shows Pittiplatsch on the value of 15 Pfennig and Schnatterinchen and Bummi on the value of 40 Pfennig, each on a television antenna.

The same puppeteer ensemble played other fairy tale characters in evening greetings and other children's programs for GDR television . These include Mr. Fuchs and Mrs. Elster , Mrs. Igel and Borstel, Uncle Uhu, Buddelflink, Mauz and Hoppel, Meister Schwarzrock and others.

By the time the DFF ceased broadcasting in 1991, around 2,000 evening greeting programs and around 1,000 afternoon programs had been produced. The puppet theater ensemble has also performed live since 1993, but almost exclusively in the former broadcasting area of ​​GDR television. In 2017, the puppeteer ensemble appeared in the casting show Die Puppenstars .

Since November 26, 2019, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Our Sandman, new episodes have been broadcast for the first time since 1991. For the 13 episodes produced on behalf of rbb television in Studio Hamburg , new hand puppets were built that should look as similar as possible to the original figures. However, they have been technically modernized, for example the Pittiplatsch mouth is now designed to be movable, unlike in the past.

Character of the figures

For the children, Pittiplatsch became one of the central puppet figures. He often speaks of himself in the third person . He is characterized by a childish, lovable, curious and mischievous nature. Often his well-intentioned, but never completely altruistic actions fail and end with the promise to be “very nice” in the future. Children easily recognize their own weaknesses, misconduct and fears in the figure. The Schnatterinchen duck figure, which almost exclusively embodies good qualities, developed into his most important dialogue partner. Schnatterinchen (managed and spoken by Friedgard kurz) is always friendly, polite and helpful, but sometimes also a little know-it-all. Moppi is usually very resourceful and mindful, sometimes rougher and very loyal to his friends.

Effect on language use and (pop) culture

Schnatterinchen's characteristic interjection “nak-nak” is the reason why East Germans often say “nak-nak” as an onomatopoeic imitation of a duck (instead of the “gak-gak” or “quak-quak” commonly used in West Germany). Pittiplatsch's typical phrases “You can believe it!” And “Oh, you my nose!” Also entered the common linguistic usage of people who grew up in the GDR. The self-designation of the goblin figure as "Pittiplatsch, der Liebe" was taken up by Manfred Krug in his role as Brigadier Balla in the film Spur der Steine (1966). Pittiplatsch's saying “Oh, you my nose!” Is also part of the goal anthem of the Eisbären Berlin ice hockey club .
