Postage stamp issues of the Soviet occupation zone
Goethe Festival Weeks (block number 6) |
After the end of the Second World War , East Germany (the area that would later become the German Democratic Republic ) came under Soviet administration .
As early as June 1945, new postage stamps were issued on the territory of the Soviet occupation zone (SBZ). The expenditure can be divided into regional expenditure and general expenditure:
Regional editions (until May 1946)
- Postage stamp issues for Berlin and Brandenburg (SBZ)
- Postage stamp issues for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (SBZ)
- Postage stamp issues for the Province of Saxony (SBZ)
- Postage stamp issues for East Saxony (SBZ)
- Postage stamp issues for West Saxony (SBZ)
- Postage stamp issues for Thuringia (SBZ)
For general editions (from June 1948) see the list below
From June 1948 on there was a break between the Allies of the Western Powers and the Soviet military administration , which in the course of the process led to the fact that the joint issues of the Allied occupation were initially issued with so-called district hand stamp overprints. From July these were then issued with the imprint "Soviet / Occupation / Zone". From August 1948, the first own stamps appeared.
The last edition for the Soviet Zone was published on August 30, 1949 on the occasion of the Leipzig Autumn Fair. On October 7, 1949, the GDR was founded in the Soviet Zone. (→ Postage stamps from 1949 issued by the GDR Deutsche Post ). The last stamps of the Soviet occupation zone lost their validity in the GDR on December 31, 1951.
From July 1948 to August 1949 a total of 28 definitive stamps with overprint, 16 new postage stamps and 16 special postage stamps including a stamp block were issued.
