Postage stamp issues for West Saxony (SBZ)

After the end of the Second World War , East Germany (the area that would later become the German Democratic Republic ) came under Soviet administration . In five regions of the Soviet occupation zone , including West Saxony , new postage stamps were issued from June 1945.

In philately, the stamp issues, the part of the former Reichspostdirektion Leipzig located west of the Elbe as well as the Mulde and the Zwickauer Mulde , is referred to as West Saxony . This area had been occupied by the United States until June 30, 1945 and there was no postal traffic. It only began under the Soviet occupation on July 23, 1945 in Leipzig and was gradually resumed. On August 6, 1945, postcards and letters were admitted to the entire Soviet occupation zone. The first stamps appeared on September 28, 1945 until then cash franking was carried out.

Between September 1945 and May 1946, a total of 26 definitive stamps and 18 special stamps were issued in the West Saxony area , four special stamps were issued as a stamp block.

In Saxony (province, east and west Saxony) from October 29 to December 10, 1945, all valid German zone, OPD and local issues could be used for franking, from December 11, 1945 only the OPD and local issues of the Soviet zone.
