Bruno Raetsch: Portrait of Karl Raetsch

Karl Raetsch (born October 1, 1930 in Berlin ; † May 2, 2004 in Potsdam ) was a German painter .

life and work

Karl Raetsch grew up in Fürstenwalde / Spree . After attending school, he first did an apprenticeship as an electrician, then he continued to attend school until he graduated from high school, while taking part in painting courses he continued his artistic education. This enabled him to study at the Dresden University of Fine Arts from 1953-58 under Professors Erich Fraaß and Paul Michaelis . After graduation, he married Barbara Raetsch and moved to Potsdam. In 1962 and 1964 the sons Bruno and Robert were born. In 1979 he began to expand the cemetery chapel on Hermannswerder into his studio and gallery. Here he worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist until his death.

The extensive oeuvre by Karl Raetsch, created in almost half a century, mainly comprises paintings , including many landscapes and countless individual and group portraits that were created on his own initiative or on behalf of others. They consistently show a certain distance to the required positive image. Over the years, and especially after the political change , his displeasure was expressed in fairytale-like expressive images of social forces and in caricaturing depictions of the people involved.

Of the graphic techniques, Karl Raetsch especially cultivated the woodcut and the watercolor . In addition to a large number of postcard-sized cuts, large-format colored cuts were printed from several plates, for example to the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm . The number of watercolors that were created especially while traveling and, like the woodcuts , reveal a relationship to the work of Expressionism , seems unmistakable .
