Erich Fraaß

Erich Fraaß (born April 14, 1893 in Glauchau , † January 9, 1974 in Dresden ) was a German painter .

Life

Erich Fraaß was born the son of a master weaver . From 1907 he started his apprenticeship as a lithographer . During his apprenticeship training he painted his father at the loom. The pastor of his parish saw this picture and recognized the great talent of young Fraass. Without the knowledge of the Fraass family, the pastor collected money from the region's textile companies in order to enable him to do an education that went beyond his apprenticeship. With a donation of 250 gold marks, the young artist left his hometown and went to Dresden.

Fraass accepted the Dresden School of Applied Arts in 1910 and attended it until 1912. In the same year, he switched to Oskar Zwintscher at the Dresden Art Academy . As a volunteer in the First World War , he had to interrupt his studies and continued after the war as a master student of Robert Sterl . He attended the art academy until 1922. After completing his academic training, he made trips to Holland, Spain, the Hohe Tauern and Upper Bavaria , from which he artistically processed many impressions. Returning to Dresden, he found many motifs of his work in the landscapes of the Elbe Valley , the Lusatian Mountains , Saxon Switzerland , the Moritzburg pond area and the Ore Mountains .

In 1920 he was a co-founder of the artist group Die Schaffenden . Erich Fraaß was a member of the German Association of Artists . Until 1930 he was a member of the board of the Dresden Artists' Association . He was a co-founder of the " Dresden Secession 1932 " and was a member of its board. He heavily criticized the dissolution of this group in 1934 by the National Socialists. As a result, his artistic status was revoked. During the war years he belonged to the group of the upright , which consisted of seven Dresden painters.

Like many other Dresden painters, Erich Fraaß lost his studio and some of his works in the bombing raid on Dresden on February 13, 1945. After this turning point, he participated intensively in the organizational work of the artists' association in order to quickly bring the cultural life of the destroyed Dresden back to life to let. Fraaß worked from 1947 to 1958 as a lecturer and professor at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden . Study trips took him to Holland , Spain , the Alps and Galicia . He cultivated friendships with Bernhard Kretzschmar and Otto Griebel, among others .

Fraaß created his works out of the experience of nature, and out of awe of the people who find their livelihood in this nature. In the twenties and thirties in particular, impressive, powerful portraits of farmers and their cattle were created - almost always in front of bright landscapes. In later years he found more filigree descriptions of landscapes.

Erich Fraaß lived and worked in Dresden and in Gostritz in the Erzgebirge foothills, especially in the area around the Wilisch . He took his personal motto from Leonardo da Vinci : "Remember that you should learn to be careful rather than to learn".

In terms of art history, Erich Fraaß belongs to the Lost Generation and Expressive Realism .
